In this, the fourth race in this year’s series, we had unfamiliar winners. Adam Petty and Rebecca Harrison were not there to try to sustain their recent winning streak. In their places Chris Smith and Sharon Hammond were the leading male and female and the top two finishers. Well done! Sharon pushed husband Richard into a still very credible fourth spot, behind Randolph Smith in third.
The Hammond and Thorpe children had a great competition in the shorter event. Rudi Hammond finished 1st, narrowly edging out Jack Thorpe (2nd.) Louis Hammond (3rd) was also less than a second ahead of Charlie Thorpe (4th.) Both of these “battles within a battle” were settled in an all-out sprint finish.
It’s hard to take in everyone’s performances while also timing, but I did notice that Randolph Smith continued his remarkable improvement. It’s also noteworthy that Eddie Fisher was last out of the water by some distance and yet finished in the top half – quite some performance, helped somewhat by his personal cheering section!
A huge thank you to Donna Pilgrim, our safety marshal at the bike turn, and to the ladies who helped me (Alan Gilbertson) with the names of finishers while I was timing. Last but not least, thank you to 5 year old Nicholas Southern, who helped by giving me an enthusiastic heads up when athletes were close to finishing (enjoy your 6th birthday this weekend, Nicholas!)
Finally, kudos to Dave Hope for stopping to help a child who was having trouble with a pedal. Dave has form for helping kids like this. Some say he stops to help because he needs a breather; I know it’s because he has a big heart.
Apologies to anyone whose name is misspelled (please email [email protected] to let me know.)
